Ask Greg
When creating PDFs using Bluebeam, did you know you could attach other files to the PDF, basically using the PDF like a wrapper? It’s easy to do and can be very useful when communicating on a project with multiple file types involved.
For instance, if you need to send a PDF to someone but also want to include the Excel spreadsheet referred to in the PDF, attach it in Bluebeam. Or perhaps you want to send a 3D Model along with your 2D drawing. Instead of sending an email with multiple attachments, attach the 3D model to your PDF and send only one.
This feature becomes extremely useful when emailing companies whose Firewall is selective about which file attachments are allowed to get through. Most will strip unwanted attachments or worse, block the email altogether.
With the release of Acrobat’s version 9, they have taken this concept to a whole other level. Stepping outside of the PDF framework, they have integrated a Flash interface to view the attached files. While this is admittedly visually cool, it has created some issues for a lot of PDF users as the technology is proprietary to Acrobat. Unless you have Flash installed on your computer and have the most recent version of Acrobat, you won’t be able to open or even view the files. Not only that, but other PDF software providers cannot support this feature.
As good PDF citizens, Bluebeam has kept this handy feature simple, easy to use, and easy to share. You can see and open these attachments, using any PDF software, not only Bluebeam. We hope you agree simpler is better
