Tablets: The benefits of using Revu with a Tablet PC

The most obvious benefit to using a tablet PC is mobility. A tablet PC is an extremely practical method for completing a walk-through of a project, building, or job site for processes such as punch and back check. The idea behind a tablet PC is to have a computer that can be used while actively on the move. A stylus, or pen, is used as the main input device on a tablet PC instead of a keyboard and mouse. Using a stylus allows you to interact with a computer in a more natural manner, and gives you much better mobility in a non-office environment like a job site.

There are a few different types of tablet computers:
    Slates
The original tablet design is known as a slate. A slate is a pure tablet that has a screen, but does not have any type of keyboard.

    Convertibles
A convertible is the most common type of tablet due to its flexibility. They open like a laptop, but their screens can be rotated and folded back over the keyboard to create a writing slate.

    Hybrids
A hybrid tablet is a cross between a convertible and a slate. Although they look and perform nearly identical to their convertible counterparts, they have the useful function of being able to completely disconnect the keyboard section until it is needed.

Bluebeam PDF Revu includes features specifically designed for tablet PC users who are looking for an easy way to review and annotate PDF files with a tablet pen. Below are some features within Revu that I find to be the most beneficial for tablet users.

Pen
The Pen tool in Revu is the digital equivalent of writing on paper with ink. The Pen allows users to write onto a PDF file or drawing or draw a sketch.

Pressure sensitivity
With pressure sensitivity technology, Revu simulates the characteristics of writing with pen and paper. Thicker ink lines appear when pressing harder on the tablet screen and thinner ink lines appear with a lighter touch.

Eraser
The Eraser works specifically with the tablet pen. To use the Eraser, all you need to do is flip the Pen over. Revu recognizes this action and will automatically select the Eraser tool for you. The Eraser supports three sizes and modes, and simply removes the pen marks in the path of the cursor.

Easy Navigation
Bluebeam uses tabbed navigation, making it easy to open and review multiple PDF files simultaneously. When you double tap on the workspace with your tablet pen a zoom control will appear. Once the zoom control appears, simply slide your pen up and down to zoom in and out.

Shift button
When using Revu on a tablet you will notice that a Shift button is located next to the Profile button. Selecting the Shift button is the equivalent of holding down the Shift key on a keyboard, and allows a tablet user to use keyboard shortcuts that normally would only be available with the use of a keyboard. For example: Shift+Click allows you to add or remove a control point to a Polyline or Polygone and/or move the location of an Area measure label.
Auto Recognized Text
Auto Recognize Text automatically translates written text to true text that is searchable in a PDF, and is only supported when using a Tablet.

Free Text Tool
The Free Text markup tool makes use of a TIP (Tablet input panel) with text recognition when adding a Free Text, Callout, or Leader Line annotation to your PDF. When you write on the upper half of the input panel your text will appear in the lower half. A delete, backspace, return, and space button are included in the TIP to make editing easy. An additional benefit to these types of annotations is that they are all text searchable.

Undocking Tabs
Revu allows you to undock the Tool Chest, Measure or Properties tabs. Once a tab is undocked it can easily be moved closer to the area of the PDF that you are working on, or quickly be moved out of the way. By undocking tabs, you can close the various side panels within Revu, which allows you to take full of advantage of your screen. This feature proves to be extremely useful during the punch process, as it makes the punch keys located in your tool chest more accessible.

Tablet Profile
Revu includes several predefined profile settings to make it easy for you to switch your interface between different views. After installing Revu, you can select the tablet profile to display the interface in landscape mode for easier viewing, markup and editing. You can also customize the profile to suit your needs or create multiple profiles for different job functions.
