What is the difference between PDF Flags and Bookmarks?

Bluebeam PDF Revu v 7 introduced a new feature called Flags. Flags are very similar to the existing bookmarks feature, but have some differences both in function and in the way they are intended to be used.

Bookmarks are a way of adding structure and ease of navigation to the PDF. Bookmarks are meant to be a public and permanent part of the PDF file. The best way to think of bookmarks is as a table of contents for the PDF, even though bookmarks can have links that are external to the PDF file.

Flags were a result of customer requests. Users told us about how they missed being able to quickly flip between pages in a set of blueprints and how there was no digital equivalent. Flags are a visual mechanism for emulating a visual Post-It® or sticky note to dog-ear a page or to mark a specific location on a page.

There are two types of Flags. The first is the equivalent of a bookmark and can link to a page, area of a page or an external file. This type of flag is useful when working with a PDF that already has bookmarks. The flag performs the same function but will not interfere with the existing bookmarks in the PDF. The second is a "Linked Flag." It is also a markup element that is visible in the PDF file. The linked flag is very similar to a "sign here" Post-it note, that has customizable text.

One thing that sets flags apart from bookmarks is that they are visible in the Thumbnails view. A small colored flag icon is displayed in the upper right corner of the thumbnail of any page that contains a flag or linked flag. Flags also have their own independent panel on the right side of the interface for easy access.

A video tutorial about flags can be found in the Resources section of the Bluebeam web site. Browse to http://www.bluebeam.com/web07/us/products/revu/7.0/ and then click "Flags."
