How can I subtract a section from an Area measurement?
We have a number of users asking this question. It’s a very common practice when trying to calculate the surface area of a wall that contains windows and doors, or the area of a kitchen floor that contains an island.
There is no direct way to create links between two measurements in Revu. However, three key features in the Markups list – custom Subject names, Measurements columns and the Markups Summary – can be used to generate an Excel Spreadsheet with all the data needed to perform these calculations.
For example, you need to define "Wall 1" which will be the total area of the wall and then define "Wall 1 - window" and "Wall 1- door" which will be subtracted from "Wall 1".
- Open the PDF file in Revu.
- Select the Measure Profile. (On the View menu, click Profiles, then Measure)
- Press Alt+L to display the Markup list, if it is not currently displayed.

Selecting the Measure profile will display the Length, Area, and Volume columns in the Markup list (note: if you do not select the Measure profile, you will not see the Length, Area and Volume columns). These columns contain the same value as the Comments column, but do not contain the units. This means that the values will be summed in the Markup list and can also be added after you export the Summary to Excel.
Here is a very simple example of how to create three area measures for a wall, door and window on an elevation.
Take Measurements in Revu
- Click the Measure button, then click Area.
- Type "Wall" in the Subject box.
- Define the area for the entire wall.
- Click Area and type "Window" for the Subject.
- Define the area of the window.
- Click Area and type "Door" for the Subject.
- Define the area of the door.
Export the Markups List Summary to Excel
- In the File menu, click Markups > Summary > CSV Summary. The CSV Summary window will display.
- Fill the check box next to Open file after creation and then click OK.
- Type the File name and click Save.
- The CSV file will open in Excel.
There are two columns that you are interested in, Subject and Area. Expand the Subject column so you can see the full text. You can now use Excel function to subtract the sum of the door and window from the wall to find the surface area of the wall.
